• Nollywood on iTunes

The African film industry is stepping onto the world’s stage with help from Black Speech Media Group, which produces and distributes Nigerian and Ghanaian films known as Ghallywood and Nollywood respectively, along with Autonomous Entertainment, a marketing and distribution boutique.

Black Speech Media Group, a multimedia entertainment company and among the leading producers and distributors of “Ghallywood and Nollywood Films”, entered into a partnership with Autonomous Entertainment, a New York based media marketing and distribution boutique to bring Nigerian and Ghanaian films to the major digital platforms, starting with iTunes.

A few months ago, Timothy Kublenu, CEO of Black Speech Media Group, was approached by Cedric Beasley, CEO of Autonomous Entertainment, with a proposal on combining resources to bring Nollywood and Ghallywood into the digital distribution space. With more than 5,000 Nollywood titles on the Black Speech Media Group platform, the two companies agreed on a plan that would build a landing page or digital channel on most of the major digital platforms, such as iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Cinema now and others.

The Nigerian Film industry (Nollywood) has grown into the second largest film industry in the world. In number of annual film productions, Nollywood is ahead of the United States and behind only Indian cinema (Bollywood). The Nollywood Film industry is worth $3.5 billion as of 2008 and produces over 2,000 films annually. An average production cost of $50,000 a Nollywood title can sell an average of 500,000 DVD copies in local markets. A hit may sell several hundred thousand DVD’s in Nigeria and twice as much worldwide providing astounding returns for the producers. References: CNN, Forbes, BBC News, Wikipedia

The first batch of titles, have already gone live in six territories: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. With more territories and more titles rolling out in the coming months, this venture can be game changing for the Nollywood and Ghallywood industries, much like the rise of the Bollywood industry ten years earlier.

“Now that we are in the door, we are negotiating the addition of the Nollywood genre across other platforms, such as Vudu, Xbox, Sony PlayStation, etc.” added Timothy Kublenu, CEO of Black Speech Media Group.
